Sister Mary Leon Riney

Sister Mary Leon Riney, 83, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at Mount St. Joseph. She was in her 63rd year of religious life.

The daughter of Thomas Leon and Mary Irmine Mulligan Riney of West Louisville, Kentucky, she taught at Mount St. Joseph Academy, St. Mary Magdalene, Sorgho, Owensboro Catholic High School, and many other schools in the Owensboro Diocese, Louisville Diocese, and Nebraska.

She served in parish ministry at St. Paul Parish, Princeton and Resurrection Parish, Dawson Springs (both 1986-89), and at Christ the King Parish, Madisonville (1989-95). She retired to the Motherhouse in 1995 and worked as a volunteer in the community Archives until 1997.

Survivors include four sisters, Mary Lou Mudd of Owensboro, Mary Gertrude Mudd of Clarksville, Ind., Patricia Cheshire of Memphis, Tenn., and Mary Virginia Dorsten of Kettering, Ohio; three brothers, the Rev. C. Phillip Riney of McDaniels, Jack Riney of Louisville, and David Riney of La Jolla, Calif.

Services were on Thursday, January 30, at Mount Saint Joseph Chapel. Father C. Phillip Riney was celebrant. Burial was in the convent cemetery at Maple Mount.
