Sister Helen Smith, OSU: Aug. 6, 1946-Sept. 2, 2019

Sister Helen Smith, 73, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 42nd year of religious life. She was a native of Bartlesville, Okla.

Sister Helen was a creative woman, from her beautiful knitting to developing spiritual programs for the children who she loved to lead into the mystery of God. She was an Ursuline Sister of Paola, Kan., prior to the merger with Mount Saint Joseph. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in education and earned a master’s degree from the University of Kansas in educational administration.

Sister Helen served in Kansas as a teacher at Queen of the Holy Rosary, Overland Park (1979-80, 1982-83), and St. John School, Greeley (1981-82). She was principal and teacher at Holy Trinity School, Paola (1983-94), and principal at Holy Cross School, Overland Park (1994-2000) and Holy Rosary-Wea School, Bucyrus (2000-2005). She was elected as a councilor for the Ursuline Sisters of Paola from 1990-98 and from 2002-2006. She was assistant superior from 2006-2008, until the merger with the Ursuline community in Maple Mount. Sister Helen was director of sacramental preparation for children and youth at the Church of the Nativity in Leawood, Kan., from 2010 until moving to Maple Mount in 2018. She was property manager in Paola from 2009-2018. She was elected as a councilor for the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph in 2016, and this year began serving as manager of the Mount Saint Joseph Gift Shop.

Survivors include the members of her religious community, her brother James D. Smith of Jenks, Okla., and four nephews.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Thursday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan, OSU: Oct. 28, 1941-June 10, 2019

Sister Rose Marita O’Bryan, 77, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died June 10, 2019, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 58th year of religious life. She was a native of Owensboro and was the only daughter born to Marion and Elizabeth O’Bryan. She had three brothers.

Sister Rose Marita had a smile awaiting all those she met. She was known for her leadership skills and her deep love of the Ursuline charism of Saint Angela Merici.

She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1960. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in German from Brescia College (now University) in 1965, and a master’s degree in religious education and theology from St. John’s College, Cleveland, in 1973.

She was a teacher at Seven Holy Founders School in Affton, Mo., (1965-72), then was the religious education coordinator at the school and parish (1972-76). She was a pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish in Hickman, Ky. (1991-96). She served in several internal ministries for her community. She was an elected councilor on the Leadership Council from 1976-84 and was elected major superior from 1996-2004. She was director of vocations, postulants and the contact program (1984-90), and coordinator of Mission Effectiveness (2005-2016). She was director of the Contemporary Woman Program at Brescia University (2005-16).

Survivors include the members of her religious community; two brothers, Joe (Maggie) O’Bryan of Owensboro and David (Trafta) O’Bryan of Louisville; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 13, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Wednesday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Sister Mildred Katzer, OSU: Dec. 3, 1918-May 19, 2019

Sister Mildred Katzer, 100, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died May 19, 2019, in Richmond, Kan., in her 82nd year of religious life. She was an Ursuline of Paola, Kan., prior to their merger with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. A native of Garnett, Kan., she liked making nun dolls and teaching Vacation Bible School.

Sister Mildred taught for 59 years in Kansas and Oklahoma. In Kansas she taught at St. John School, Greeley (1943-45 and 1973-85); Holy Name School, Kansas City (1945-54); and Queen of the Holy Rosary School, Overland Park (1954-58 and 1960-72). She also taught at Immaculate Conception School in Tulsa, Okla., (1940-43), where she also helped cook, and at St. John School, Bartlesville, Okla., (1958-60).

Sister Mildred was a remedial teacher for St. Agnes School, Shawnee Mission, Kan., (1985-90), and a religion teacher/tutor for Holy Angels School, Garnett, (1990-99). From 1999-2019, she visited the sick in St. Teresa Parish in Richmond.

Survivors include the members of her religious community; a sister, Rita Jackson of Ottawa, Kan., and nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23, 2019, at St. Teresa Church, Richmond. Visitation and a vigil service will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m.  to 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Ursuline Cemetery in Paola, Kan.

Sister Marie William Blyth, OSU: August 30, 1929-March 10, 2019

Maple Mount — Sister Marie William Blyth, 89, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died March 10, 2019, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 69th year of religious life. She was a native of Denver.

 

Sister Marie William was an Ursuline of Paola, Kan., until the merger of that community with Mount Saint Joseph in 2008. She loved teaching and helping adults to grow deeper in their faith. She was never without a joke in hopes of lightening someone’s day.

Sister Marie William taught in Kansas at St. Ann School, Prairie Village (1952-55) and at Queen of the Holy Rosary in Overland Park (1957-61). She was both principal and teacher at Wea Grade School, Bucyrus (1961-69), Holy Angels School, Garnett (1969-76) and Holy Trinity School, Paola (1976-83). She was director of religious education at Holy Cross Parish in Overland Park from 1984-95, and at Queen of the Holy Rosary Wea Parish from 1995-2005. From 2000 until moving to Maple Mount in 2009, she ministered to associates, which she continued to do in Kentucky. She also taught at St. John School in Bartlesville, Okla. (1955-57).

Survivors include the members of her religious community and her nephew Joseph Wilkes of Thornton, Colo.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Wednesday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.
