The annual Rainbow Mass, which brings together students from all 17 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Owensboro, packed the Owensboro Sportscenter on Sept. 16, 2026.

Bishop William Medley told the children and teachers assembled that when he prays for them, “I see a rainbow. In you, I see the promise of God to take care of each other, and to take care of creation. You are the light of the world. You can’t see a rainbow in the dark.”

The Rainbow Mass – so named because the various school colors present a rainbow – was begun by the late Ursuline Sister Amelia Stenger and the late Bishop John McRaith in the 1980s. A handful of Ursuline Sisters were on hand for the Mass.
