Reflective Moments January 2021

By Sister Marietta Wethington

Maya Angelou tells us that hate has caused a lot of problems in this world, but it has not solved one yet.

The opposite of hate is love. Maya Angelou also tells us love recognizes no barriers. It will leap fences and other obstacles. If you find it in your heart to care for someone else, you have succeeded. Many of us know this from our own experience.

Saint Angela Merici loved God. She spent a lot of time in prayer and directed her followers to take refuge at the feet of Jesus. Her biographers tell us that she spent her mornings in prayer and her afternoons in service to others. I remember a song I used to hear that told us love isn’t love until you give it away. Service follows love.

Jesus tells us that the first and greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart and that the second is to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. I believe we all can make our part of the world a better place if we extend ourselves in love and service.

I love this perspective! But, am challenged now as how to balance treasure and service in the midst of Coronavirus. Like many volunteers, I’m in the older‘@ risk’ group. So for now, just making contributions.
