Crucifix: A Book of Life

crucifixSaint Thomas, the apostle who is known as “the Doubter” is quoted as saying that he learned more from the crucifix about life than from all the books of theology.  In this Lenten season, I invite you to a new spiritual practice called “Visio Divina” or “Divine Seeing.”  In this practice one is invited to contemplatively reflect on a piece of visual art and discovering what God is saying to you through this holy art. Don’t be surprised if you are both comforted and disturbed.

If you would like to know God, look at the Crucifix. If you would like to love God, look at the Crucifix.  If you want to serve God, look at the Crucifix.  If you hope for eternal happiness, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder what you are and your worth, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how much God wants you in heaven, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how God tries to prevent you from the attraction to evil, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how God will help you to save your immortal soul, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how much you should forgive others, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how much you should do for the salvation of souls, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how much your faith demands of you, in humility, poverty, charity, meekness and every virtue, look at the Crucifix  If you want to know what unselfishness and generosity are, look at the Crucifix.  If you wonder how far youw own unselfishness should go to bring others to Christ, look at the Crucifix.  If you wish to live well, look at the Crucifix.  If you wish to die well, look at the Crucifix.           –Author unknown
