Ursuline Sisters honored at diocesan-wide jubilee celebration

Women religious celebrating jubilees of profession across the Diocese of Owensboro were honored on Oct. 24, 2026, with four communities in attendance at St. Martin Church in Owensboro.

It was a smaller group than normal, with just three jubilarians present – all Ursuline Sisters. They were Sister George Mary Hagan, celebrating 70 years; Sister Angela Fitzpatrick, 60 years; and Sister Martha Keller, 50 years. Sister Rita Scott, who is celebrating 60 years, could not attend, nor could Glenmary Sister Catherine Schoenborn, who is celebrating 75 years.

Sister Martha Keller read a passage from Jeremiah, in which God told his prophet, “To whomever I send you, you shall go; whatever I command you, you shall speak. Have no fear before them, because I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.”

Bishop William Medley used those words in his reflection to celebrate the jubilarians and all women religious.

“Ours is an extraordinary calling,” he said. “It’s not superior to the sacrament of marriage or for those who remain single. But you go where you are meant to go. You are religious women who went where no one else thought to go. Thank you.”

Afterward, the guests were all treated to lunch by the Serra Club.
