Sister Mary Agnes VonderHaar celebrates 70 years as an Ursuline

We honor five Ursuline Sisters who are celebrating 70 years of religious life in 2023. Today we celebrate Sister Mary Agnes VonderHaar, a native of Vine Grove, Ky.

Sister Mary Agnes loves to laugh, but took her role as a teacher seriously. She enjoys teaching others to grow deeper in their faith. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 1965 from Brescia College, and earned a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from Western Kentucky University in 1975, along with an advanced degree in school administration and supervision.

All of her ministries have been in Kentucky. She was a teacher at St. Thomas More School, Paducah (1955-60), St. Charles High School, Lebanon (1967-69), Trinity High School, Whitesville, (1969-75) and Trinity High School, Louisville (1981-88). She was principal of St. Alphonsus School, St. Joseph (1960-64), St. Ann School, Howardstown (1964-67), and St. Joseph Inter-parochial School, Bowling Green (1975-81).

Sister Mary Agnes was assistant superior and director of retirement for the Ursuline Sisters (1988-96). She was pastoral associate at Sacred Heart Parish, Hickman (1996-2004) and then apostolic minister (2004-08) and minister of presence (2008-16) at St. Mary of the Woods, McQuady, and St. Anthony Parish, Axtel. She was the Motherhouse daily annalist from 2017-21. She is retired at the Motherhouse and is active in the Powerhouse of Prayer.

  1. Michele Morek

Sister Mary Agnes is a great lady and a good friend… I have good memories of serving on committees with her (we laughed a lot!) and in congregational leadership. Thanks for each one of those 70, Ag!

  2. Nancy Roby Litke

I have always loved Sr Mary Agnes! She was a wonderful teacher & mentor. She made me a better person with her influence while she taught at Trinity in Whitesville. I remember her being so fun & full of life! Happy Jubilee!

  3. Judy Robinson

I remember Sr. Mary Agnes, when she taught at Trinity High in Whitesville. I haven’t seen her in years. She was one of my favorite, I used to walk with her after school back to the convent, as I was walking home. Firm but kind. What a blessing. Congratulations Sr. Mary Agnes on your anniversary of 70 yrs.
