Sister Jean Madeline’s 99th Birthday

Sister Jean Madeline Peake, the oldest Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, added another candle to her cake on July 22, 2014 when she turned 99 years old. Several family members and friends came to her birthday celebration at noon in the Motherhouse dining room.

Sister Jean Madeline is also celebrating her 80th year of religious life in 2014. A native of Holy Cross, Ky., she was an educator for 48 years, primarily in Kentucky. She taught in Owensboro, Central City and Calvary and was a teacher and principal in Wax, Harrodsburg and Louisville. She served 11 years as parish minister in Leitchfield, Ky. In Missouri, Sister Jean Madeline taught in Affton. In her first two ministries from 1936-37, she was a housekeeper at the convent in Jeffersonville, Ind., and then in Affton. Sister Jean Madeline was director of the craft room at Mount Saint Joseph from 1996-2002 and continued to quilt for the Ursuline community until 2011. Today she is active in prayer.

Sister Jean Madeline was my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade teacher. I learned more in those four years than in high school, college, graduate school or 27 years of teaching. She is the best!
