Today we honor Sister Francis Louise Johnson, who is celebrating 70 years as an Ursuline Sister. She was born in Waverly, Ky., and grew up in Mayfield, Ky. Known by most people as “Sister Lou,” she exudes prayerfulness and a gift of hospitality to all those she meets. Congratulations Sister Lou!
She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Brescia College in 1967, and a master’s degree in elementary education from Western Kentucky University in 1972. She was a teacher for 24 years in four states, a principal for two years and spent 18 years in parish ministry. In Kentucky, she taught at St. Edward School, Jeffersontown (1957-58), St. Catherine School, New Haven (1958-59), Peonia School, Peonia (1966-67), St. Margaret Mary School, Louisville (1971-72), St. Ignatius School, Louisville (1972-73) and St. Brigid School, Vine Grove (1981-83). She was principal at Holy Cross School, Holy Cross (1970-71).
In Missouri, she taught at Seven Holy Founders School, Affton (1959-64), St. Teresa School, Glennonville (1973) and St. Angela Merici School, Florissant (1983-84). In Nebraska, she taught at St. John the Baptist School, Plattsmouth (1964-66). In New Mexico, Sister Francis Louise was a teacher at Sacred Heart School, Farmington (1967-70) and St. Charles School, Albuquerque (1973-80).
She served as parish minister at St. Francis de Sales Parish, Paducah, Ky., (1984-89) and as pastoral associate at St. Aloysius Parish, Pewee Valley, Ky., (1989-2002). From 2003-17, she was coordinator of the Guest House at Mount Saint Joseph. She is retired at the Motherhouse, where she is active in the Powerhouse of Prayer.
