A little more than a year after breaking ground, St. Paul Catholic School in Leitchfield, Ky., dedicated the Sister Anne Michelle Mudd Annex on Oct. 19, 2024, named for the Ursuline Sister who served 31 years at the school.
“The spirit of Sister Anne Michelle Mudd was here present with us,” said Angie Whitworth, the office manager of St. Paul School. “You could just feel her presence with us.”
St. Paul School has seen an increase in enrollment in the past year, but still has fewer than 100 students. Regardless, it was out of space. There was not a dedicated room for each grade level, and the kindergarteners were in a 12-square-foot room.
The former pastor, Father Steve Hohman, led the drive to raise money for the annex. The groundbreaking was Aug. 2, 2023 – the first day of school – and the annex was completed in time to open this school year.
“We got to start the school year with Pre-K to second grade having classes in the new building,” Whitworth said. “Our principal, Todd Johnston, has his office in the new building as well.”
The Mudd family has long been supporters of the school, and a great number of the family members were in attendance for the dedication. Sister Anne Michelle attended the school and was one of the fiercest supporters of keeping it open. She spent 31 of her 60 years as an Ursuline Sister serving at St. Paul as a teacher or principal. She was still serving as a religion teacher when she died suddenly on Aug. 11, 2020.
The Mudd family is getting a plaque to hang on the side of the building saying, “Sister Anne Michelle Mudd Annex,” Whitworth said.
The new pastor, Father Suneesh Mathew, along with Father Brandon Williams and Deacon TJ Dennison were in attendance for the dedication. Father Williams previously served at three churches in Grayson County, and Deacon Dennison is serving at those parishes now in Peonia, Grayson Springs and Wax. Several parishioners, parents, and students were also in attendance, including Jackie Milliner, the oldest living alumna of the school.
“I would guess there were close to 100 people in attendance,” Whitworth said.
