Strive to illuminate rather than shine

journey

The gift of Saint Thomas Aquinas to those who pursue truth and knowledge is such a treasure.   His writings speak directly to the heart and mind.  Pondering their meaning  can plunge you into a depth of reflection that is life changing.  Through the years I have been edified and inspired by many of his words.   Angela and Aquinas have some topics that seem to connect and illuminate each other.  Angela exhorts her daughters “to live in harmony” and Aquinas reminds us, “How can we live in harmony? First we need to know we are all madly in love with the same God.”

Yesterday, the church’s feastday illuminated Angela and today, the church celebrates Thomas Aquinas’ contribution to our faith and understanding of  theology. I offer you some of my favorite Aquinas quotes.  I invite you to create some time to reflect, and if you like, please share your reflection with me.

It is requisite for the relaxation of the mind that we make use, from time to time, of playful deeds and jokes.

Better to illuminate than merely to shine, to deliver to others contemplated truth than merely to contemplate.

The things that we love tell us what we are.

Wonder is the desire for knowledge.

To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.
