Sister Marita Greenwell, OSU

Sister Marita Greenwell, 85, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died June 21, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 65th year of religious life. She was a native of Rhodelia in Meade County.

Sister Marita was an inspiration to so many people, first as an encouraging music teacher, and then as the leader of the Contemporary Woman Program at Brescia College/University, a revolutionary self-esteem building program for women which she directed for 32 years (1973-2005).

She was a teacher at St. Martin School, Rome (1948-52), Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Maple Mount (1960-68), Blessed Mother School (1954), Immaculate School (1970-71), and Brescia College (1971-73) in Owensboro, St. Thomas More School, Paducah (1954-55), St. Edward School, Jeffersontown (1952-53), St. James School, Louisville (1953-54), St. Catherine Grade and High School, New Haven (1955-57), St. Martin Grade and High School, Flaherty (1968-70), and at Seven Holy Founders School, Affton, Mo. (1957-60). She was co-director of the Ursuline Associate program from 1996-2002.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Hughes of Elizabethtown, nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community.

The funeral Mass was at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation began Thursday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Glenn Funeral Home and Crematorium, Owensboro, was in charge of arrangements.
