Our next jubilarian Sister to honor is Sister Marie Joseph Coomes, a native of St. Lawrence, Ky., who is celebrating 60 years of religious profession. She is a prayerful person who is always willing to serve those in need. Congratulations Sister Marie Joseph!
She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Brescia College in 1971, and a master’s in education from Western Kentucky University in 1980. All of her ministries have been in Kentucky. She was a teacher at St. Peter of Antioch School, Waverly (1968-70), St. Martin School, Flaherty (1970-74), St. Martin School, Rome (1974-75), St. Francis of Assisi School, Loretto (1975-77) and St. Francis Xavier School, Raywick (1977-78).
She ministered at the Motherhouse infirmary (1978-82, 1986-2004) and in housekeeping at the Mount Saint Joseph Prayer House (1982-86). She served in the senior companion program with Audubon Area Community Services in Owensboro (2006-13). She served in housekeeping, presence, and support for the Ursuline Sisters at 514 St. Ann St. in Owensboro (2013-18), and as assistant to the director of Local Community Life at the Motherhouse (2018-22). She is retired at the Motherhouse, where she is a substitute receptionist and active in the Powerhouse of Prayer.
