Sister George Marie Wathen, 94, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, of Maple Mount, Ky. died Wednesday, August 20, 2003, at Mount Saint Joseph Motherhouse. She was in her 76th year of religious life. She was received into the novitiate March 19, 1928. She made temporary profession in 1930 and perpetual profession 1933.
The Marion County, Ky., native taught at St. Joseph School, Central City, 1947-53; Rosary School, Paducah, 1953-55; and St. Benedict School, Wax, 1956-57. She also taught and served as principal in Louisville and in Affton and Florrissant, Mo. From 1975-81, she served as local superior at Mount Saint Joseph Motherhouse. She ministered in health care at Mount Saint Joseph, 1981-82, and in the Mount Saint Joseph Shop, 1982-91. She retired from active ministry in 1991.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Rose Bryant of Louisville and Sister Marie Bosco Wathen of Brescia University, Owensboro; a brother, Joseph Paul Wathen of Lanesville, Ind.; a half-brother, George Robert Wathen of Mammoth Cave; many nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.
Services were held on Saturday, August 23, at Mount Saint Joseph Chapel, Maple Mount, Ky., with burial in the convent cemetery at Maple Mount. Glenn Funeral Home, Owensboro, was in charge of arrangements.
