Frances was born October 23, 1891, the daughter of Horace and Lydia Goodwin Hagan of Owensboro, Ky. She was the middle of seven children who had not been baptized when their father died. He had been baptized but not raised as a Catholic. Their mother, never a Catholic, died a year later. When the oldest boy wished to marry, he looked for a suitable place for his four sisters and Mother Aloysius Willett welcomed them to Mount Saint Joseph Academy in January 1906. At that time Frances was 14 years old. She and her three sisters were baptized on March 19, 1906. Frances completed her secondary education at Mount Saint Joseph and then entered the novitiate. Following a postulancy of six weeks, she received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Stanislaus on August 30, 1910.
Beginning in 1911, Sister Stanislaus taught in the various grade schools staffed by the Ursuline Sisters — St. Peter Alcantara at Stanley, St. Patrick at Stithton — in Kentucky and in Nebraska at Wynot, Snyder, and Nebraska City. In 1931 she began teaching the secondary subjects of general science and home economics at St. Charles High School in Lebanon, Ky., and at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Sister Stanislaus was elected Zelatrix for a three-year term in 1943. Following that position, she taught again at Mount Saint Joseph Academy for a period of 23 years.
Sister Stanislaus retired from teaching in 1969 and spent the remainder of her years at Mount Saint Joseph. Sister found great joy in creating small flower gardens to beautify the campus. Her greatest pride was the rose garden, providing roses for the chapel. Sister Stanislaus reached her 100th birthday on October 23, 1991. By that time, she was a patient in the infirmary until her death on December 1, 1993, at the age of 102.
Her funeral Mass was celebrated on December 4 by Msgr. Bernard Powers, homilist, and Father Bernard Barnes, OSM, interim chaplain. The remains of Sister Stanislaus are laid to rest in the convent cemetery.
