Rose was born September 7, 1897, one of the six children born to James and Elizabeth Campion Chamberlain who lived in Browns Valley, Ky. Her early education was in the public school of Utica and at St. Anthony School, Browns Valley. At the age of 17, Rose entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph. She received the Ursuline habit on March 25, 1916, and became known Sister Pauline.
Sister Pauline began her ministry of domestic service at Cloverport, Ky. She was assigned to St. Paul Convent, Louisville, for a short while before going to St. Angela Home on Edenside Avenue in Louisville where she remained from 1925 to 1953. From there she was sent to the Ursuline Convent at Brescia College in Owensboro until 1962. She then spent 12 years cooking and cleaning at the bishop’s residence in Owensboro. She retired to Mount Saint Joseph in 1974.
During the last 10 or 12 months before her death, Sister Pauline suffered from frequent falls and broken bones requiring hospitalization and surgeries. Suffering a fall on March 21, 1983, she was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Owensboro where she died suddenly of a heart attack. Bishop Henry Soenneker, Msgr. Gilbert Henninger, Msgr. George Hancock, and Msgr. Bernard Powers concelebrated the funeral Mass. Her remains are buried in the convent cemetery. She was preceded in death by her Ursuline sister, Sister Lucilla.
