The daughter of John and Julia Hancock Wheatley, Mary Alicia (Allie) was born December 17, 1890. She had a happy home life with her family and attended the elementary school at Waverly, Ky. In 1905, Allie joined the other girls from Union County coming to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She returned each year until 1908. After a year at home, Allie entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph on July 4, 1909. Ten days later, received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Paschal.
Sister Paschal’s first mission was her home parish, St. Peter, Waverly. She taught there three years. Afterward, her teaching apostolate took her to other parochial schools in Kentucky: Clementsville, Curdsville, Louisville (St. Columba and St. Paul), Bardwell, New Haven, Stanley, Fredericktown, and St. Raphael. For one year, 1918-1919, Sister Paschal taught at Wynot, Neb.
Sister retired from teaching in 1934. She returned to Mount Saint Joseph where she served as receptionist. Her gracious, hospitable manner made visitors feel special and most welcome. Because she presided at the “front door” of the Mount for so many years, Sister Paschal was familiar, by name, with many of the family members of the Sisters, alumnae, and business acquaintances.
In November 1977, she suffered a broken hip and other severe internal injuries from a fall. She died January 20, 1978. At the time of her death, Sister Paschal was the oldest member in the Mount Saint Joseph Ursuline Community. Her nephew, Father Clarence Hite, was among the concelebrants of the funeral Mass held on January 23. Sister Paschal’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
