Pauline was born May 13, 1901, one of the six children born to William and Rose Hayden Lyvers in Rome, Ky. Her education began at St. Joseph School in Bowling Green where she was taught by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, then she later attended the public school at Russellville. Pauline’s high school years were spent at Mount Saint Joseph Academy and when she was 18 years of age, she entered the novitiate. During these months Pauline helped teach the little girls who lived in the academy building. She had the privilege of being present at the death of Father Paul Joseph Volk on November 2, 1919, as Sister Aloysius Willett had her accompany her to the Guest House. After her eight‑month postulancy, Pauline received the Ursuline habit on March 19, 1920, and the name Sister Mary Rose.
Prepared for the teaching apostolate Sister Mary Rose’s first mission was an assignment to Earlington, Ky., where she taught at Immaculate Conception School. Other assignments took her to the various parochial and public schools within Kentucky, and to St. Joseph School in Paul, Neb. Sister Mary Rose was primarily a grade school teacher and had taught at each of the grade levels through her 54 years of teaching. Her last and longest assignment was Sts. Joseph and Paul School in Owensboro where she spent 23 years expanding the minds of her many students.
Sister Mary Rose, retiring from teaching in 1975, returned to Mount Saint Joseph where she spent her final years. She had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother and while physically able, she visited the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows at Belleville, Ill., every year. Sister Mary Rose died peacefully on August 13, 1988, and following her funeral Mass, she was buried in the convent cemetery. Her two Ursuline sisters -‑ Sisters Henrietta and Rose Vincent ‑- preceded her in death.
