Born on Christmas day, 1876, Mary Agnes was the eleventh child of Linus and Jane Ann Wathen Buckman. Her parents, descendents of the early Catholic pioneers, migrated to Union County, Ky., from Bardstown, Ky. She was well‑trained in her Catholic faith during her early years. She attended Mount Saint Joseph Academy in 1893‑1894. Returning to Uniontown after that school year, Mary Agnes lived with her mother and brother, Emmett. She spent much time caring for the sick and lonely members of the parish.
In 1906, she responded to the call to religious life and entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph. After a postulancy of four days, Mary Agnes received the Ursuline habit on August 23, 1906, and became known as Sister Mary George.
After vows, Sister Mary George was missioned at Mount Saint Joseph Academy for eight years as teaching assistant to Sister Angela Kohl in the music department. In 1916, she began a 20-year residence at St. Angela Home in Louisville where she was both superior and music teacher. She was then assigned to St. Bernard Academy in Nebraska City, Neb., remaining there for six years as superior and music teacher. In 1943, the Chapter elected Sister Mary George to the Council to serve as treasurer.
Following her three‑year term as community treasurer, Sister Mary George returned to St. Angela Home in 1947 as music teacher. During the year she was stricken with cancer. She died on February 24, 1948, while recuperating from surgery at St. Joseph Infirmary. A Mass was offered at St. James Church in Louisville on February 25. Sister Mary George’s remains were brought to Mount Saint Joseph that same day. On February 27, Msgr. Gilbert Henninger, chaplain, celebrated the funeral Mass in the convent chapel. Following the Last Blessing, given by her nephew, Father Sterling Buckman, SJ, her remains were carried to the convent cemetery for burial. Among her survivors was her Ursuline niece, Sister Rose Agnes Buckman.
