Born Nov. 16, 1906, in St. Mary, Ky., Agnes Nevita was the second child of 13 born to Joseph and Susan Thompson Logsdon. Most of her grade school years were spent at St. Charles School. When she was in the eighth grade, the family moved to Loretto and the children attended St. Francis of Assisi School in Chicago. After her sophomore year at St. Francis, Agnes Nevita continued her schooling at St. Augustine High School in Lebanon where she graduated with honors. She entered Spenserian Business College in Louisville where she prepared for a business career. Upon completing her education, her first secretarial job was with a business firm in Louisville. Agnes Nevita entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph on February 14, 1929. On August 15, 1929, she received the Ursuline habit and was given the name Sister Mary Charlene.
Following final vows, Sister Mary Charlene was assigned to St. James School in Wynot, Neb., where she taught grades five through eight for two years. She returned to Kentucky and taught upper grades at Bardwell and Mayfield. She began teaching music in 1938 at Fredericktown, followed by assignments to St. Francis, Flaherty, New Haven, Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Leitchfield (St. Joseph), Paducah (St. Thomas More), St. Charles and St. Francis, all in Kentucky. In 1974, Sister Charlene composed and directed a hymn to Saint Angela honoring the Mount Saint Joseph Centennial.
Illness forced Sister Charlene to retire from teaching in 1981. She returned to Mount Saint Joseph as a patient in the infirmary. Her health rapidly declined. As a result of a paralyzing stroke following a serious heart attack, she suffered the loss of speech, except to say, “I love you.”
On April 29, 1983, Sister Charlene died at Mercy Hospital in Owensboro. At the funeral Mass, the choir sang the centennial hymn to Saint Angela that Sister Charlene had composed. Sister Charlene’s remains rest in the convent cemetery. Among her survivors was her Ursuline sister, Sister Joseph Marian.
