Mary Frances, youngest of 13 children of Joseph Anthony and Effie Turner Krampe, was born September 17, 1910, in Browns Valley, Ky. She had a half-sister from her father’s first marriage. Five siblings died in infancy. Mary Frances’ faith journey began the very next day with baptism at St. Anthony Church. Mary Frances began her formal education at St. Anthony School, Browns Valley near Utica, in September 1917. She continued school at St. Joseph Elementary School and St. Joseph High School in Owensboro. She completed high school at Mount Saint Joseph Academy while in the novitiate.
On September 8,1930, Mary Frances, entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph to begin preparation for the life of an Ursuline. Fifteen other young ladies entered with her. On March 20,1931, Mary Frances received he Ursuline habit and received the name Sister Mary Ann.
In September 1933, shortly after professing temporary vows, Sister was assigned as housekeeper for 13 years to the Ursuline Sisters teaching in the schools in Flaherty, Shively, Clementsville, Bardwell, Raywick, and Central City, Ky., and Plattsmouth, Neb. Sister pursued her education, earning a BS degree from Brescia College, and was assigned as teacher in primary grades at Ursuline‑staffed Kentucky schools in Curdsville, Clarkson, Hardinsburg, Paducah (St. Thomas More), New Haven, Jeffersontown, Shively, Howardstown, and Knottsville.
In 1979, after 46 years of mission life, Sister retired to the Mount Saint Joseph Infirmary. At this time, she began a new ministry of making rosaries. She had suffered for many years from multiple allergies. Sister died on Saturday, July 6, 2002, just 31 days after having moved from the infirmary into the new health care facility, Saint Joseph Villa.
Sister’s great-nephew, Father Bruce Fogle, celebrated the funeral Mass on Monday morning, July 9, 2002. Sister Mary Ann’s Ursuline sisters, Sister Angela Marie I, Sister Antoinette, and Sister Angela Marie II, preceded her in death. Her remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
