Anna Mildred, one of nine children of William Weston and Clara Frances Fuerst Davis, was born April 23, 1918, in Owensboro, Ky. Her faith journey began May 5, 1918, at St. Joseph Church, Owensboro.
Mildred’s formal education began in September 1924 at St. Joseph School, Owensboro, and continued there through graduation from high school in 1936. On February 13, 1937, Mildred entered in Mount Saint Joseph novitiate. On August 14, 1937, she was invested in the Ursuline habit and received the name Sister Marie Claire.
Shortly after professing temporary vows in 1939, Sister began mission life as a housekeeper, first at St. Denis, Fancy Farm, Ky., and at Holy Trinity, Fredericktown, Ky. Her gracious and generous service added greatly to the success of the Sisters teaching in the school and to the quality of community life among them. In 1942, Sister began teaching at St. Lawrence, Ky. She also taught in other Kentucky schools serving as principal and superior: St. Paul, St. Columba, Mother of Good Counsel and St. Ignatius in Louisville, and at St. Denis, Shively. She also served as principal and superior at Seven Holy Founders in Affton, Mo. In 1983, she was appointed assistant administrator in the Education Department at Brescia College.
Sister Marie Claire retired from Brescia and came to the Motherhouse in 1991. After a long illness, Sister died January 29, 1998. Father Anthony Shonis, chaplain, celebrated the funeral Mass on Sunday, February 1, followed by the burial service in the convent cemetery.
