The daughter of Mars and Susan Railey Stallings, Lillie Mae was born March 14, 1884, in West Louisville, Ky., the youngest of three children. Her father was originally from Nelson County and her mother from Marion County. At the age of 18, Lillie Mae entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph and was a postulant for only two months. She received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Juliana on October 21, 1902.
As a young Sister, Sister Juliana had charge of the wash house until 1918. This primitive laundry room was located in the old Bloemer building, where the clothes were boiled in huge tubs and scrubbed on the washboard. When the weather was rainy, all the clothes were taken to the Academy attic to dry. Sister Juliana had two brief assignments away from Mount Saint Joseph. In 1918, she spent a year as housekeeper at St. Anthony in Jeffersonville, Ind. She spent the next two years as housekeeper at St. Martin of Tours in Flaherty, Ky. She returned to Mount Saint Joseph in 1921 to be in charge of the sewing room in the Academy taking care of bed linens for the dormitories, and supervising the girls in cleaning lobbies, bathrooms and balconies. She assisted the novices with gathering and preparing vegetables and fruits for the meals and canning. She often helped with the many duties connected with butchering of hogs and cattle. Sister was strong, healthy and unusually generous with her many gifts and talents. She gracefully turned the mundane tasks of daily life into labors of love.
Sister Juliana died on September 26, 1967, at age 81. On September 28, Msgr. Edward Russell celebrated her funeral Mass. Sister Juliana’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
