Annie Hill was born Nov. 7, 1891, the daughter of Sprig and Elizabeth Hancock Davis, a pioneer Catholic family in Sturgis, Ky. She received elementary education in the local public school. In 1906, Annie came to Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She was awarded a prize for diligence during her first year at boarding school, and was a recipient of the Christian Doctrine Medal.
Annie entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph on May 9, 1909. On July 14, she received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Jean D’Arc, later Americanized to Sister Joan of Arc.
Sister Joan of Arc studied and prepared to teach music. At her first mission, St. Bernard School in Clementsville, Ky., she taught private music lessons and trained both the parish and school choir. Later assignments took her to other Kentucky schools where she often taught primary grades in addition to private music lessons and training choirs: Holy Cross, Cloverport, Livermore, Flaherty, Fredericktown, Fairfield, Calvary, Bardwell, and Browns Valley. Out-of-state assignments included Wynot and Paul, Neb. In 1949, while missioned at Paul, she was diagnosed with cancer.
Sister Joan of Arc returned to Louisville, Ky., for additional care and surgery. With no chance of recovery, she was brought to Mount Saint Joseph to spend her final months in the infirmary. She died January 17, 1950. Her nephew, Father Robert Wheatley, and Msgr. Gilbert Henninger, chaplain, concelebrated the funeral Mass, with burial services following in the convent cemetery.
