Born Aug. 8, 1887, in Sorgho, Ky., Agnes was the daughter of John and Nancy Pike. She entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph when she was nearly 20 years old. On July 14, 1909, Agnes received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Genevieve.
Following preparation for a teaching apostolate, Sister Genevieve’s early mission assignments took her to the public and parochial schools of various small towns in Kentucky. She was a teacher of the lower grades and 14 years later, she was assigned to St. Theresa School in Glennonville, Mo. After nine years she returned to Mount Saint Joseph where she took the oath of office of clerk for the Mount Saint Joseph Post Office and served in this capacity for five years. Sister Genevieve returned to teaching after a period of illness and for 20 years she taught in the parochial schools in the various Kentucky parishes.
Retiring from teaching in 1965, Sister Genevieve returned to Mount Saint Joseph. One of her main interests was caring for the rose garden near the cemetery which she did diligently until she was no longer able, and then she started a small one closer to the convent buildings. Sister Genevieve suffered a heart attack in the spring of 1976 from which she never fully recovered. On July 22, she became very ill and died peacefully the following day, July 23, 1976. Among the priests concelebrating her funeral Mass was Father Henry Cecil, a former pupil of Sister Genevieve. Following the Mass she was buried in the convent cemetery not far from the rose garden she lovingly tended for so long.
