Eudocia, one of the children of James A. and Virginia Hamilton Mudd, was born November 3, 1903, at Lebanon, Ky. Her faith journey began with baptism at St. Charles Church on November 8. Her formal education began in September 1910 at St. Charles Elementary School, St. Mary, Ky. She attended St. Charles High during the first two years of high school.
On July 2, 1921, Eudocia along with 22 other young ladies entered the Mount Saint Joseph novitiate to begin preparation for the life of an Ursuline educator. On May 20, 1922, she was invested in the Ursuline habit and received the name Sister Eudocia. During this time, Eudocia enrolled in Mount Saint Joseph Academy and finished high school.
Shortly after professing temporary vows, Sister was assigned to grades 1-4 at Hardinsburg, Ky., where she continued for five years. Other assignments in the 50 years she spent in the classroom were in Ursuline-staffed schools in Louisville, Fancy Farm, Jeffersontown, Stanley, Howardstown, Raywick and Peonia in Kentucky, and in San Fidel, N.M. During the summers of these years, Sister pursued her own education, earning a BS at Nazareth College, Louisville.
In 1977, Sister Eudocia retired to the Motherhouse where she resided in the Infirmary. For a time, she worked with crafts, especially needlework, but after surgery on her hand, she was not able to continue. After that she spent her time in prayer and in preparation for the call of her God. Loneliness became her companion in 1992 with the death of her dearest friend and sister, Sister Mary Oda. Sister Eudocia enjoyed playing three card rummy and bingo.
After trips to the hospital, Sister Eudocia died September 12, 1997, in the Mount Saint Joseph Infirmary. Father Anthony Shonis celebrated her funeral liturgy on Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m. She was buried in the convent cemetery.
