The daughter of John and Genevieve Buckler Wimsatt, Lucy was born July 17, 1885, in St. Mary, Ky. When she was 24 years of age, she entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph. She received the Ursuline habit on July 14, 1909, and given the name Sister Emmanuel.
Sister Emmanuel was assigned first to St. Peter School in Waverly, Ky., where she remained for one school term. Her other assignments were to Louisville (at St. Columba School for two school terms, St. Angela Home for two years) and St. Bernard School in Clementsville, Ky., for one school term. In 1937, Sister Emmanuel returned to Mount Saint Joseph. Sister’s physical health seemed to be fine, but she suffered a mental illness which caused her to be confined in psychiatric institutions for the remainder of her life. In October 1940, Sister was admitted to Dubuque, Iowa, Hospital. In March 1941, she was transferred to St. Bernard Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa, for greater supervision and additional treatment. Sister died there December 27, 1953.
Msgr. Gilbert Henninger, chaplain, celebrated the funeral Mass at Mount Saint Joseph. Sister Emmanuel’s remains rest in the convent cemetery.
