Cleo was born Oct. 21, 1920, the daughter of Damien and Bertha Wethington Stallings of Waterflow, N.M., the third of eight children. She received her elementary and secondary education at Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow. Cleo graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Junior College in June 1940. She entered the novitiate and received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Consolata on August 14, 1941.
While in the novitiate, Sister Consolata taught at St. Mary Magdalene Elementary School, Sorgho, Ky. After profession of vows, she was missioned to Wilhelmina, Mo., for five years, teaching grades one through four. She then spent a year teaching middle grades at Peonia, Ky. She was missioned to Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow. In 1957, she spent two years at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, and earned a master’s degree in mathematics. She returned to Kentucky and taught in Fredericktown High School until she was elected community treasurer in 1963.
Sister Consolata was diagnosed as having cancer in March 1968. She was able to perform the duties of treasurer until the last month before she died on October 6, 1969. Her funeral Mass was celebrated the following day by Father Patrick Warren, a cousin, Father Bernard Powers, chaplain, and Father Donald Spalding. Five other priests were present in the sanctuary. Sister Consolata’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
