Eula was born December 3, 1896, the daughter of Charles and Genevieve Fogle Clayton of West Louisville, Kentucky. She attended the Daviess County public schools, and Mount Saint Joseph Academy during the years 1913-1917. Eula entered the novitiate from the Academy and after a six-month postulancy, she received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Charlesetta on May 2, 1917.
Sister Charlesetta’s mission life as an Ursuline began in 1917 at Earlington, Kentucky, as housekeeper for two years. She spent the remainder of her mission life in classroom teaching: in Kentucky, at Rome, Louisville (St. Columba), and Shively. In 1926, she was assigned to Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow, New Mexico, for six years. She returned to Kentucky, and because of a serious lung condition, was off duty at the Motherhouse, under doctors’ care, for two years. She was assigned to Hardinsburg and Rome before being assigned to Affton, Missouri, in 1938 for one year. She came back to Kentucky and taught at Calvary for a year. Again her doctors prescribed rest, and she spent two more years off duty at the Motherhouse before being assigned to teach at Buechel, and Rome, her last teaching assignment. She resided at St. Mary Home in Owensboro during the 1945-1946 school year and again returned to the Motherhouse, at doctors’ orders, for three years of rest. Sister Charlesetta then served at the Bishop’s residence in Owensboro for 14 years (1949-1963) which covered portions of the episcopacies of both Bishop Francis Cotton R. and Bishop Henry J. Soenneker.
Returning to Mount Saint Joseph in 1963, Sister Charlesetta took care of the chaplain’s residence and the community store. During surgery at Daviess County Hospital for a broken leg, September 30, 1977, Sister Charlesetta suffered a fatal heart attack. On October 2, 1970, Bishop Henry J. Soenneker was main celebrant at her funeral Mass. Other priests at the altar with the Bishop were Father Anthony Ziegler, chaplain and homilist, Msgr. Bernard Powers, and Msgr. Edward Russell. Sister Charlesetta’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery. Preceding her in death was her Ursuline sister, Sister Geneva.
