Mary Hazel was born January 28, 1904, the daughter of Joseph and Frances Vessels Rowe of Fancy Farm, Kentucky, the fourth of twelve children. At the age of 20, she entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph. On August 15, 1925, following a nine-month postulancy, Mary Hazel received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Charles Albert.
Sister Charles Albert began her apostolate as a housekeeper in 1926 at St. Lawrence in Philpot. For the next 24 years, Sister would serve as housekeeper in Holy Cross, St. Francis, Fancy Farm and back to St. Columba in Louisville, Kentucky. She spent three years serving the needs of the teaching Sisters at Sts. Peter and Paul in Bow Valley, Nebraska. She returned to Louisville (St. Columba) for four years and in 1950, she was missioned to Farmington, New Mexico. She came back to Kentucky in 1952 and taught in Paducah (Rosary Chapel), Calhoun, Leitchfield (St. Paul), and St. Peter, Stanley.
In 1961, Sister Charles Albert was diagnosed with bone cancer and returned to Mount Saint Joseph. She spent her last years in the infirmary suffering cheerfully. Sister was a lover of nature and tended a fish aquarium in her room. From season to season, she looked forward to her death. Her wish was satisfied on October 10, 1968. Msgr. Bernard Powers, chaplain, and Msgr. Albert Thompson celebrated the funeral Mass on October 12. Sister Charles Albert’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
