Virginia, the daughter of George and Helen Powers Redmond, was born on September 23, 1889, in Louisville, Ky. She attended St. Cecilia Elementary School. During high school, she studied to earn a business certificate. She worked as a bookkeeper for several years. She was a prayerful young woman who spent much time in Sodality work. When she approached Father J.F. Norman, her pastor, with her desire to become a religious he directed her to Mount Saint Joseph. She entered the novitiate on April 20, 1913. After a four‑month postulancy, Virginia received the Ursuline habit and the name Sister Cecilia.
When the 1913‑1914 school term began in September, Sister Cecilia became the director of the commercial department of Mount Saint Joseph Academy, remaining in that position for seven years. As teacher and friend, she was beloved by pupils and respected by all who came in contact with her winning personality and genuine Ursuline spirit.
In September 1920, Sister Cecilia was assigned to St. Hubertus Academy in Owensboro as the commercial teacher. Following an attack of influenza in January 1921, she returned to Mount Saint Joseph. For more than a year she suffered the debilitating effects of the illness. Death came to her during the evening of January 9, 1922. Her mother, two brothers and two sisters along with many friends mourned her loss. Father James L. Whelan, Mount Saint Joseph chaplain, celebrated the funeral Mass. Father J.F. Norman, a special friend of the family, delivered an impressive sermon on the vows. Sister Cecilia’s remains are buried in the convent cemetery.
