Mary Aloysius was born on Aug. 31, 1896, in St. Joseph, Ky., to Joseph and Effie Turner Krampe. At this time her father was overseer at Mount Saint Joseph. She was one of 13 children and when her father found the meager salary he received as overseer insufficient to sustain them, the family moved to Browns Valley. Mary Aloysius entered the novitiate at Mount Saint Joseph in 1914, and four months later on May 5, she received the Ursuline habit and was given the name Sister Antoinette.
The first mission for Sister Antoinette was the convent at St. Columba School in Louisville where she served the teaching Sisters as housekeeper for three years. In 1918, when the flu epidemic was at its peak, and nurses were not available, she with Sister Agatha Beavin and Sister Jerome Cooper volunteered to nurse the soldiers at Camp Taylor. After that Sister Antoinette was assigned to New Mexico, where she studied nursing for a year at City Hospital in Farmington, and from there she was missioned at Sacred Heart Academy in Waterflow where she served as housekeeper and performed other duties. Sister Antoinette returned to Mount Saint Joseph where she gave care to the Sisters who were tuberculosis patients. After five years she was missioned to St. Joseph in Owensboro but returned to Mount Saint Joseph the following year. Four years later she was serving the teaching Sisters at either Howardstown or Browns Valley. Sister Antoinette’s next assignment took her to Owensboro where she kept house for Bishop Francis Cotton. She was then called to Affton, Mo., where she kept house for the Sisters who were teaching at Seven Holy Founders School. She returned to Mount Saint Joseph in 1961 and performed many duties working in the milk house and bake room, caring for the Sisters who were sick, and maintaining the guest house.
Weeks before her death Sister Antoinette’s health began to fail and she was confined to the infirmary. She quietly passed away on August 27, 1980. Her funeral Mass was celebrated three days later with Father Anthony Ziegler and Msgr. Bernard Powers as concelebrants. Among her survivors were her Ursuline sisters, Sister Mary Ann and Sister Angela Marie II. Sister Angela Marie I had preceded her in death.
