Sister Sharon Sullivan’s choices for her “Cherished Christmas Carols” detail two songs that define the holy season for her.
“The first time I heard about a saint was when I listened to the song ‘Good King Wenceslas.’ This song is a carol for Saint Stephen’s Day. It is based on the real Wenceslas, the Duke of Bohemia in the 10th century. It tells the story of his winter journey to bring gifts to a poor peasant on the Feast of Stephen – Dec. 26. He was later named a saint. The song also mentions Saint Agnes.”
“Also, it’s not Advent unless I hear the ‘Messiah. “The story is Christmas to me.” (Sister Sharon was a member of the choir who performed this show on Dec. 4, 2022, at Third Baptist Church in Owensboro.)
