Cherished Christmas Carols with Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser

Our “Cherished Christmas Carols” today come from Sister Catherine Marie Lauterwasser, who has long been a cantor for Mass at the Motherhouse Chapel. She chose four hymns that are her favorites: “Song of the Stable,” “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,” “The Beautiful Mother,” and “What Child is This.”

Sister Catherine Marie’s mother was a singer. She asked her mother to teach her to sing by choosing a heartbreaking ballad.

“I like Christmas carols and Christmas hymns. There is a difference. I like the wording and the melody. They’re just meaningful.”

She especially likes Martin Hurkens, an opera singer who was discovered in Holland while he was an unemployed baker. She also likes the music of Josh Groban (singing “What Child is This” below), and the compositions of Jesuit Father John Foley (featured on “The Beautiful Mother” below).

Ursuline Sister Catherine Kaufman also chose “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” as her favorite song.

“I first heard it when I was in Belleville, Illinois. Some relatives of our Ursuline Sisters did a beautiful rendition of it,” she said.
