Catching up with the Mission – Sister Joan Riedley

Covid restrictions have played havoc with Sisters whose ministries involve visiting the sick or elderly. That is the case with Sister Joan Riedley, who is a parish minister at Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Louisville, Ky.

“I’m playing guitar at the 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. weekend Masses, along with someone on the piano,” Sister Joan said. “I visit the homebound who allow me to bring them communion, and I make sure I follow all the Covid restrictions: hand sanitizer, wearing a mask and a short visit.

“I work with a craft group, but since someone in the group was with a family member who tested positive, we are on hold,” Sister Joan said. “We decided not to meet until all are vaccinated.

“When the nursing homes open up again, I’ll return to see the three Catholics I visit. I bring them communion, have a communion service and say the rosary with them.”
