A lesson from the Kentucky Derby

Can you feel the excitement?  Two of the most exciting minutes in sports takes place on the first Saturday in May–the running of the Kentucky Derby.  Have you selected your horse yet?  I believe there is a lesson that this famous event teaches all of us.  Favorites  are not always a sure thing.  The post positions are to be announced today and that could change the odds when announced. If you are in the spirit of the race, you may study carefully the odds, the talent of the jockey and the history of the horse’s wins.  However, I simply select a name I like.  This year I am betting on Itsmyluckyday!   Presently the odds are 12-1.   But life is full of surprises and the victory is determined by the one who crosses the finish line first!

Being a favorite for taking home the Run for the Roses and a step toward the Triple Crown makes the news and draws a crowd.  However the favorite is not always the winner in the derby and in a few days we will know for sure. However, in the race of life , it is important to remember that we are all favorites in God’s eyes.  The assurance of being a favorite in God’s eyes is a guarantee. It does not demand anything of us but simply to accept God’s love and run the race with faithfulness, love, and service.  In this regard everyday is a ” lucky day!”    When you think about the grand prize it may not be a triple crown but it is the crown of eternal life. What a jackpot!

Good luck to the horses and the jockeys this Saturday!  I will meet you at the race via television!   Remember the lesson — you are a favorite in the heart of God!
