Sisters share their spiritual practices as they observe Lent

To help us journey through Lent in 2024, we asked the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph about a favorite book they read during these 40 days, or perhaps a favorite meatless meal recipe. We call this feature “How We Observe Lent.” Each week of Lent will feature a different Sister’s spiritual practice. Our contribution today is from Sister Mary Matthias Ward.

“As Lent approaches I say to myself, ‘What will you do?’ There is always the fasting, the doing without meat, and I probably look more at my prayer life.

“I will share two books I use. G.K. Chesterton is my spiritual guide and mentor through “Lent and Easter Wisdom from G.K. Chesterton.” It is filled with gratitude and appreciation. It is a theology of joy. The spiritual reading I do is the book “Bread and Wine, Readings for Lent and Easter.” This book of meditations is written by a spectrum of classic and contemporary Christian writers, with selections grouped around themes such as temptation, crucifixion, resurrection, and new life. I doubt if anything rivals this collection.

“During Lent I try to wear my cross pin made of blunt nails.”
