Sister Pat Rhoten remembers a simple Christmas in Nebraska

Sister Pat Rhoten brings to a close our “Gift of Christmas” memories this Advent with a memory of a simple Christmas that was still beautiful.

“When I was 6 years old, we lived on the plains of Nebraska. I was an only child until I was 10. Because we were dirt poor, Santa wasn’t going to come that year. There was some excuse about there not being enough snow for him to land his sleigh.

“My mother got a shoe box, put some cotton batting in it, made a pillow out of corn husks and placed my dolly in there for her bed.

“My dad got a coat hanger, formed it into airplane wings, and bent the hook to look like its motor. He covered the wings with tissue or newspaper. He made the engine pointy, so it looked more like a bird than an airplane. But it flew for a while.

“I wasn’t sad at all. It was a lovely Christmas.”
