Ursuline Sisters join other women religious to support Paris Climate Agreement

The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are joining with other religious communities across Kentucky and southern Indiana to state their disappointment with the federal government’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement.

In a letter signed by the Ursuline Sisters’ leadership and also the leadership of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (Nazareth, Ky.), the Loretto Community, the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville and the Sisters of St. Benedict (Ferdinand, Ind.), the women religious call for the United States to honor its commitment to the 2015 agreement addressing climate change. Here is their letter:

“Together with The Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), we are deeply disappointed by President Trump’s 2017 pledge to pull the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement and we are profoundly troubled by the decision to formally request U.S. withdrawal from this critically important international agreement. Catholic teaching is clear – climate change is a grave moral issue that threatens our commitment to: protect human life and dignity, exercise a preferential option for the most vulnerable, promote the common good, and care for God’s creation. The failure of the United States to fulfill its 2015 commitment dishonors our nation and threatens our common home. We will continue to raise our voices against climate policies that harm Earth and its people and to advocate for climate justice.”

These religious communities represent Sub-Region 6 of LCWR, and plan on joining their voices to speak out together on social justice issues. LCWR is an association of leaders of congregations of Catholic women religious in the United States. It has nearly 1,300 members, who represent more than 38,800 women religious in the United States.

    I stand with you wholeheartedly!
It is an injustice what Trump is doing to our world, just so he can brag about all the jobs he creates. Someone, something, needs to wake him to the real world and our future!
