To celebrate Catholic Sisters Week on March 8-14, 2021, several religious communities took part in food drives. The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph provided “food for the soul” for adolescent girls.
On March 11, the Ursuline Sisters donated 10 quilts to the Mary Kendall Campus of the Kentucky United Methodist Children’s Homes in Owensboro.

“This is food for the soul, so they will know someone loves them,” said Sister Amelia Stenger, congregational leader of the Ursuline Sisters.
Sister Elaine Burke and Sister Cecelia Joseph Olinger – who both help with quilting at Maple Mount – delivered the quilts to Roy Hicks, director of campus operations at Mary Kendall. The facility provides residential treatment services and emergency shelter for teenage girls who are runaways, truants or beyond the control of their parents.
Once a girl has completed 21 days at Mary Kendall, Hicks lets her pick a donated quilt of her choosing that is hers to keep. The quilt program has been ongoing for at least 25 years, Hicks said.
Quilting has been part of Ursuline community for decades, and Sister Amelia thought during these pandemic days when gathering is difficult, sharing quilts with the girls of Mary Kendall would give them a tangible reminder that someone is praying for them.
