Sister Sara Marie Gomez celebrates 60 years as an Ursuline Sister

Sister Sara Marie Gomez went to heaven on July 24, 2022, three months after this jubilee notice appeared on the website.

The Ursuline Sisters are honoring five women this year who entered the community in 1962. The first is Sister Sara Marie Gomez.

Sister Sara Marie, a native of Gobernador, N.M., is celebrating 60 years as an Ursuline Sister. Her passions have included serving as a special education teacher when few people understood that role, and carrying on the Ursuline tradition of service and hospitality in her beloved New Mexico. She earned a bachelor’s degree in special education from Brescia College, in Owensboro, Ky., in 1966, and earned a master’s degree in special education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1977.

Sister Sara Marie was a teacher at St. Denis School, Louisville (1966-67), then a special education teacher at St. Charles School (1967-72), St. Charles Junior High School (1973-76) and Marion County High School (1976-77), all in Lebanon, Ky. She was a teacher at Sacred Heart School, Farmington, N.M. (1972-73), then a religion teacher at the school from 1997-2018. She taught at St. Joseph School in San Fidel, N.M. (1977-83), Mary Carrico School in Knottsville, Ky. (1983), Cathedral School (1984-89) and St. Angela Merici School, (1989-90), both in Owensboro.

She became a pastoral minister and director of religious education at St. Joseph Parish, Aztec, N.M. in 1990. She added director of religious education duties at Holy Trinity Parish in Flora Vista, N.M. in 1999, and she served at both parishes until 2019, when she retired and moved to Maple Mount. She was the last Ursuline Sister to serve in New Mexico, a ministry the Ursulines served continuously for 100 years. Today, she lives at the Motherhouse and is a member of the Powerhouse of Prayer, praying daily for the ministry of Sister Joan Riedley.

Congratulations Sister Sara Marie!

Friends can write to her at 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356.
