Sister Nancy Murphy celebrates 60 years as an Ursuline Sister

Sister Nancy Murphy is our next of the nine Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph celebrating a jubilee of religious life in 2021. She is a native of Curdsville, Ky., and is celebrating her 60th year as an Ursuline Sister.

She was taught by the Ursuline Sisters in grade school and at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. Throughout the years she learned to do multiple ministries at once without losing her focus on prayer and spirituality. She earned her bachelor’s degree in French from Brescia College in 1965, and a master’s degree in elementary education from Western Kentucky University in 1973.

Her former religious name was Sister Mary Hugh Murphy. Sister Nancy taught at St. Margaret Mary School (1965-68), St. Edward School (1968-72), and St. Ignatius School (1980-81) all in Louisville; at St. Catherine School, New Haven, Ky., (1972-73), and was head teacher at Calvary Public School, Calvary, Ky., (1973-78). She served as principal of St. Thomas More School, Paducah, Ky., (1978-80) and she taught at St. Angela Merici School, Florissant, Mo., (1981-84).

Sister Nancy ministered at Brescia College/University as assistant financial aid director (1984-89), grants research writer and assistant director of institutional research (1994-97), and director of institutional research (1997-2002).

She ministered in her community locally as director of the juniorate program (1984-91), as local superior (1989-94), director of novices (1997-2004), as assistant local community life coordinator (1999-2000, 2003-2005) and assistant to the archivist (2016-17).

Sister Nancy was local coordinator and property manager of the former motherhouse in Belleville, Ill., (2005-2010) following the merger of the Ursuline Sisters of Belleville with Mount Saint Joseph. From 2007-2010, she served as an office clerk with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Belleville.

Sister Nancy was an elected member of the Ursuline leadership Council from 2010-16, while also serving as congregational secretary and director of formation. She is now serving as congregational secretary.

Congratulations Sister Nancy!

Congratulations Sister Nancy (Mary Hugh). I still can’t believe it’s been 43 years since you taught me in 6th grade at Calvary Elementary. You haven’t changed a bit. Hoping to be able to see you this September!

Congratulations to my sister who is a few years younger than me. I recall many good times we had at home and fondly remember visiting you when you first entered the Ursuline order.

Although many years have passed we still enjoy getting together at our brother or sister’s home to play cards, just like we did before leaving our home in Curdsville. Win or lose in cards you have always been very competitive.

God bless you as you celebrate your 60th anniversary and keep praying for the rest of us Murphy’s!
