Sister Michael Ann Monaghan celebrates 70 years as an Ursuline Sister

The next of our Sisters celebrating a jubilee in 2022 is Sister Michael Ann Monaghan.

Sister Michael Ann, a native of Central City, Ky., is celebrating 70 years as an Ursuline Sister. Sister Michael Ann holds with great love each student she was privileged to help and is grateful for the parents and all who trusted and supported her during her teaching ministry. She earned her bachelor’s degree in history from Brescia College, Owensboro, Ky., in 1965. She earned her master’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in reading from Western Kentucky University in 1973.

She was among the first teachers at Immaculate School in Owensboro (1954-63), and also served in Owensboro at Sts. Joseph and Paul School (1966-72). She also taught in Kentucky at St. Ignatius School, Louisville (1963-64) and St. Romuald School, Hardinsburg (1983-86). She spent one year at St. Teresa School in Glennonville, Mo., (1996-97).

Much of her education career was spent in New Mexico. She served three times at St. Joseph School in San Fidel (1964-66, 1977-83 and 1989-96, this time as principal and teacher), twice at Sacred Heart School, Farmington (1972-77, 1986-89 as principal and teacher) and also at Immaculate Conception School, Cuba (1997-98) and St. Francis of Assisi School, Gallup (1998-2001.) She ministered in outreach to St. Joseph Parish, Aztec (2005-06).

From 2007-08 and again from 2009-12, she served in family ministry in her native Central City. At Maple Mount, she was a receptionist at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center (2003-05), and since 2012, she has volunteered in the Finance office.

Congratulations Sister Michael Ann!

Dear, dear, dear Sister Michael Ann! You were just a “baby” nun when you taught me in the first grade, but what an impression you made on ALL of us! You were wonderful and I certainly will never forget how warm, kind, and loving you were to our very large class! Ernie and I will be calling on you soon to come to an Immaculate class reunion, if you’re feeling up to it❣️Shirley (Osborne) Taliaferro

Congratulations on your 70-year jubilee. You probably don’t remember the incident that sticks out in my mind from our introduction on orientation day for the 1961-1962 first grade at Immaculate. As I recall, you were quite cordial. You also struck quite the imposing figure in the habit of the day to a six-year-old. Unfortunately for me, my diplomatic and self-preservation skills had yet to be developed. When you asked whether I preferred to be called William, Bill, or Billy, I rather sheepishly replied, “Well, my friends call me Billy, but you’d better call me William.”

    All the best.

I still see your smiling kind face when I entered the first grade classroom the first year of Immaculate School. The lessons and love of God that you taught us has made a lasting impression in my life. Thanks for everything and for being you.

HI Sister Michael Ann! Thinking of you fondly here in New Mexico as you celebrate 70 years. How time flies! Thank you for writing back to me. I hope I can get another letter off to you again soon. Have been busy getting ready to teach again in-person after two years of virtual COVID. God bless you for the many years of service you gave the Native American community in the southwest. I will always think of the days when we all worked together to keep St. Joseph school running along with Father Larry’s help and those of others. May Our Creator continue to bless you with all good things as you continue to serve Him. You are a blessing to us all!
