Reflective Moments September 2019

Most people get angry once in a while. I surely do. That’s okay. Anger is an emotion. It is what we do with our anger that counts. Do we give into it? Do we rage at others? Or do we channel it into something positive? Anger is energy and can be used for good.

In Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, Jesus tells us not to let the sun go down on our anger. I believe Jesus is telling us to find ways to get rid of our anger before nightfall. Married couples are often advised not to go to bed angry at each other and to make sure their anger at their children is resolved before bedtime.

How do we get rid of our anger? There are some positive actions suggested for that. Deep breathing is one of them. Breathe out all that is negative, sending it to the hands of God to be transformed into something good. Slowly, deeply breathe in all that is positive, transforming the anger into something good.

Physical exercise is one of the ways we can get rid of our anger. Next time you feel anger rising up in you, get up and go for a walk. If it is pretty outside, nature is a wonderful way to transform the anger. Nature is a wonderful healer. If more people in our nation would seek positive ways to get rid of their anger, perhaps there would not be so much gun violence and tragic shootings occurring. Yes, anger can be sinful or anger can work for good in our life. The choice is ours. Which one will you choose?

Reflection:

Are you prone to anger? What do you do with that anger? Reflect on the times you have been angry. What have you done with the anger?

I have found walking is very helpful. It does disperse that negative energy.
Thank you, Sr. Marietta, for sharing words of wisdom on this timely topic!
