Reflective Moments October 2019

For me, October seems like such a special month. It opens with the feast of St. Therese of the Child Jesus, often known as “the Little Flower.” She was also the third woman declared a Doctor of the Church.

October 2nd is the feast of the Guardian Angels. In our Catholic tradition we were taught a lovely prayer to pray to our guardian angel. I still try to pray that prayer each morning and each evening.

October 4th is the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi who heard a voice tell him to go repair God’s Church. At first, he took that literally and started to repair the building. Gradually he understood it meant the Church that was in need of reformation. Isn’t that appropriate for today’s Church? We hear so many stories of sexual abuse by the clergy. Saint Francis had a great concern for the environment. If he were alive today, I believe he would promote Pope Francis’ letter on the Earth, Our Common Home.

October 15th is the feast of Saint Theresa of Avila, another Doctor of the Church.

October 18th is the feast of Saint Luke, the Evangelist who brings us the Word of God.

For Ursulines, October 21st is special because it is the feast of the Virgin who had a great concern for women. Saint Angela choose to call her Company Ursulines.

Yes, October has so many special days, too numerous to mention.

Do you have your own special October days?

My brother Roman’s anniversary of death in the Korean War is October 8th and my Dad’s anniversary is October 22nd. So those are two more October saints who are special to me!
