Sister Jane Irvin Hancock, OSU, June 14, 1927 – March 8, 2017

Sister Jane Irvin Hancock, 89, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died March 8, 2017, at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 69th year of religious life. She was a native of Waverly, Ky.

Caring for others was Sister Jane Irvin’s specialty. First it was the students she taught at St. Martin School, Rome, Ky., (1950-55), Sts. Joseph and Paul (1955-58) and St. Pius Tenth (1958-69) schools in Owensboro, Ky., and at St. Leonard School (1969-75) in Louisville, Ky., where she was named Teacher of the Year. From 1975-83, she was dean of boarding students at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Maple Mount, where she acted as a second mother to many girls. From 1983-89, she served as facility organizer at Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center, caring for the guests. From 1989-2003, she was assistant director of Bishop David Apartments in Louisville, where she cared for the retired priests. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2003.

Survivors include two sisters, Sister Jane Miriam Hancock, Maple Mount, and Margaret Louise Coshan, Ontario, Canada; nieces and nephews and members of her religious community.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 13, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation begins Sunday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro, is in charge of arrangements.

    Sr. Jane Irvin was my first grade teacher at St. Pius in 1968. Heaven is getting a wonderful teacher. Thank you Sister.

    Sister Jane will be truly missed!! She was an amazing person and dedicated to whatever was put in her path!! I was the manager of the kitchen and had the pleassure of working with her at MSJ Retreat Center for several years. She sure has left an inpact on my life and I’m sure many others!! Thanks for the hard work you put into everything and the memories you left with me!!
