Mary Carrico square dancers perform for the Ursuline Sisters

Students from Mary Carrico Catholic School in Knottsville, Ky., came to Maple Mount on Jan. 30, 2023, to square dance and sing for the Sisters in Saint Joseph Villa.

Each year during Catholic Schools Week, Sister Mary Celine Weidenbenner, a teacher at Mary Carrico since 2007, brings the students to the Mount. Many years ago, Sister Mary Celine received a stack of 78 rpm square dancing records from the late Ursuline Sister Ruth Helen Flaherty, who died in 1989. Sister Ruth Helen urged Sister Mary Celine to make good use of the records, and she has been teaching her students square dancing ever since.

“We dedicate this to all you have done for Catholic education,” Sister Mary Celine said to her Sisters.

Here is a video of the fifth and sixth-graders – the Western Stars – dancing for the Sisters. These students had only been practicing for five weeks.

Here are pictures from the dancing.
