June 21, 2017 Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned At Vacation Bible School!

This week I am spending my mornings with about eighty kids from the ages of four to nine at Vacation Bible School at Saint Stephen Cathedral. We are “tracking Mary” as we board our imaginary train and venture out to learn about five places where apparitions of Mary have occurred. The first thing I have learned is that four-year old’s have more energy than the human body can contain and it MUST be released, on their time schedule and not on ours!

The reading from today’s Mass, 2 Corinthians 9:7 “Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver,” speaks volumes about the generosity of the volunteers that are helping with VBS. Each adult and teen volunteer are there helping the next generation to learn about and love Jesus in a deeper way, and each does so with a spirit of joy. Mary, the mother of Jesus, and our heavenly mother, wants to lead each of us closer to her son, our Savior.

I recently took my great nephew, Ashton, for ice cream. Being with him will usually lead to a smile on my face due to his silliness. We snapped a selfie and when I saw the look of joy on his face as he savored the cool treat my mind returned to the above scripture quote, “God loves a cheerful giver” I bet God loves a cheerful receiver as well.

May each of us, with childlike wonder, be willing to follow the example of Mary’s faithfulness as she brings us to Jesus.

What a wonderful vbs you are having. Yes, it is indeed harder to keep up with young’uns when we get older. God’s blessings always.
