Creative Arts retreat is first of its kind at the Center

For the first time, a creative arts retreat took place from June 14-16, 2019, at the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center. “Awakening the Soul with Creative Arts” showed participants how to stimulate their right brain for creativity and to deepen their spirituality. Activities included making objects with clay, writing poetry, coloring mandalas, creating collages, and prayer. The retreat was presented by Heather Berndt of Spokane, Wash., and Maryann Joyce, assistant director of the Retreat Center. The two met at an “Awakening the Creative Spirit” training program for spiritual directors. Berndt is a graphic designer, artist and retreat leader who presents a process known as SoulCollage® which she said revolves around personal exploration integrated with themes of serenity, God, shadow, gratitude and prayer. Berndt is also a frequent presenter at the Monastery of St. Gertrude in Cottonwood, Idaho, a women’s Benedictine community.
