Hutchins, Sr Clarentia webMaple Mount — Sister Mary Clarentia Hutchins, 94, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died Nov. 5, 2014 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 75th year of religious life. She was a native of Louisville.

Sister Clarentia was passionate about cheering up children, especially those who were outsiders. A down-to-earth person, she was an animal lover who enjoyed collecting stuffed animals.

An educator for 46 years, she taught at St. Lawrence School, Daviess County (1941-42), St. Denis, Louisville (1942-48), Holy Cross School, Holy Cross (1948-50), St. Elizabeth School, Curdsville (1950-54), St. Rose School, Cloverport (1954), St. Catherine School, New Haven (1954-55), St. Paul School, Leitchfield (1955-56), St. Bartholomew School, Louisville (1956-57), St. Mary Magdalene School, Sorgho (1957-63), St. Joseph School, Mayfield (1963-65), St. Romuald School, Hardinsburg (1965-71), Immaculate Conception School, Hawesville (1971-73), Our Lady of Mercy School, Hodgenville (1973-82), and St. Francis of Assisi School, Loretto (1982-87). From 1987 until her retirement in 2005, she was engaged in outreach ministry in Louisville, including work with the Red Cross, and visiting nursing homes and hospitals.

Survivors include nieces and nephews and the members of her religious community.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Thursday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro, is in charge of arrangements.

    Ah what memories of the 50’s when our good Sister Clarentia taught at St. Elizabeth’s in Curdsville…I’m sure Sister Jacinta Powers can tell you many stories as she and her brother Hubert Powers and Mary Aloysius (now deceased) lived in Curdsville during those years…Another Ursuline has made it to heaven…..Brother Gabriel Monarch, O.H.
